| HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT BAKER STREET |
Baker Street is a street in the Marylebone district of the city of Westminster in London. The Street is named after builder William Baker who laid the Street out in the eighteenth century. Originally it was a high class residential area but now is mainly occupied by shops and offices.
Marks and Spencer have their administrative headquarters here as do the Abbey National Building Society, designed in the 1920’s by J.J. Joass at the northern end of the Street.
In fiction, detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Dangermouse, Sexton Blake, Basil the great mouse detective and James Black have all lived there.
In 1835 the first permanent exhibition Madame Tussauds waxworks was opened on Baker Street. But on 1884 the museum moved just around the corner to Marylebone Road. The street is served by London Underground’s Baker Street Station which is the world’s first Underground Station. |
